What the Original Mortal Shell Took
The first Mortal Shell was famously compact: community coverage put a typical playthrough at about 15 to 25 hours, depending on player skill and how much exploring you did. That compactness was a design choice, not a limitation.
Mortal Shell II is positioned as a standalone sequel that "significantly expands" the original — with a bigger world, more weapons, and 8 Shells instead of the original's four (five counting its DLC).
Content Scope and Storage Requirements
The researched description lists over 60 dungeons, each designed to challenge your abilities, talents and weapon arsenal. For storage, the original game required about 12 GB, while Mortal Shell II's Steam page lists 70 GB of available space with an SSD required (an earlier listing showed 30 GB before the requirement grew).
One caveat: the sequel also moved from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5, so some of that size is richer assets, not purely more content. Install size measures storage requirements, not playtime; it does not establish that the sequel takes twice as long as the original.
Compact by Design: "Respecting Your Time"
The developers describe the open world as expansive yet deliberately compact, interconnected, and designed to unfold its twisted landscapes and hidden structures while "respecting the player's time". Wandering off the main path is rewarded with new Shells, weapons, upgrade items and curios — the opposite of empty open-world bloat.
In practice that means the game is built for density: Beacons act as rest and fast-travel points, and the Marrow Keep serves as a central hub, so you spend your hours fighting and discovering rather than commuting.
What Stretches a Playthrough
Your personal number depends on the obvious soulslike factors: skill (the game is punishing by design — see our difficulty guide), how many of the 8 Shells you hunt down, how many of the 60+ dungeons you clear, and whether you chase all 53 Steam achievements.
Side content is real: the gameplay reveal already shows NPCs with requests, like Vlas asking you to find his missing cat, and Ruk worrying about unguarded eggs. The original's reported 15–25 hours are historical context, not a measured estimate for this sequel.
